Patio Screening Options: Which Screen Is Right for Your Porch?

Standard mesh, no-see-um, pet-resistant, solar — comparing screen types for Wilmington-area porches and patios.

Not all screen is created equal — especially on the coast. The right screen type depends on your primary concern: bugs, pets, sun, or visibility. Here's a breakdown of the options we install most frequently in the Wilmington area.

Standard Fiberglass Mesh

The most common and affordable option. Standard 18x16 mesh keeps out mosquitoes, flies, and most flying insects while allowing excellent airflow and visibility. It's the right choice for most porches.

No-See-Um / Fine Mesh Screen

If you've ever sat on a screened porch and still gotten bitten, your screen mesh is too coarse for no-see-ums (biting midges). Fine-weave 20x20 mesh blocks these tiny insects. Slightly reduces airflow but makes a dramatic difference in comfort near waterways and marshes.

Pet-Resistant Screen

Phifer PetScreen and similar products use heavier vinyl-coated polyester that resists claws, scratching, and impact from pets. It's 7x stronger than standard screen — essential if you have dogs or cats that interact with your screened porch.

Solar Screen

Solar screens block 65–90% of UV and solar heat while still providing insect protection. Ideal for west-facing porches that get brutal afternoon sun. Reduces glare and heat gain but does darken the view somewhat.
